A disappointment for South African women’s football, according to Desiree Ellis, is the Banyana Banyana’s inability to make the Olympic qualifying cut.
On Tuesday night in Pretoria, Nigeria held the African champions to a scoreless draw.
After losing the first leg 1-0 in Abuja last week, they were unable to advance due to this outcome.
Not only did we miss out in 2020, but we were in a similar position with plenty of opportunities to go to the next stage, so it’s a major letdown for everyone interested in women’s football.
“Just like we skipped the Olympics due to this, it will be a while before we can get back on our feet,” Ellis remarked.
Moving forward, Banyana Banyana’s focus will be on defending their WAFCON title this summer.
